B. Application Information
Propylene oxide is a highly toxic, carcinogenic organic compound with the molecular formula C3H6O. This colorless, volatile liquid, with an odor similar to ether, is produced industrially on a large scale. Its main application is in the production of polyether polyols used to make polyurethane plastics. It is a chiral epoxide, although it is usually used as a racemic mixture.
This compound is sometimes called 1,2-propylene oxide to distinguish it from its isomer 1,3-propylene oxide, better known as oxetane.
Production
The industrial production of propylene oxide begins with propylene. [8] Two general processes are used, one involving hydrochlorination and the other involving oxidation. [9] In 2005, about half of the worlds production was achieved by chloropropane technology and half by oxidation. The latter method is becoming increasingly important.
Niche uses
Fumigation
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the use of propylene oxide for pasteurization of raw almonds starting September 1, 2007, in response to two incidents of Salmonella contamination in commercial orchards, one in Canada and one in the United States.Pistachios may also be treated with propylene oxide for control of Salmonella.
Microscopy
Propylene oxide is commonly used in the preparation of biological specimens for electron microscopy to remove residual ethanol from previous dehydration. In a typical procedure, the specimen is first immersed in a mixture of equal volumes of ethanol and propylene oxide for 5 minutes, followed by four 10-minute soaks in pure oxide.
Munitions
Propylene oxide is sometimes used as a fuel in fuel-air explosives in thermobaric munitions. In addition to the explosive damage caused by the shock wave, unexploded propylene oxide can cause additional effects of direct toxicity.
