Calcium Carbide 25-50mm Acetylene 75-20-7

Description:

Calcium Carbide

Calcium carbide is produced industrially in an electric arc furnace from a mixture of lime and coke at approximately 2,200 °C (3,990 °F).It is a chemical compound with the chemical formula of CaC2.Its main use industrially is in the production of acetylene, calcium cyanamide, steelmaking, carbide lamps.

Physical and Chemical Properties
The chemistry of calcium carbide is very active. Water heated decomposition to produce acetylene gas and calcium hydroxide, and release a large amount of heat. Action with nitrogen gas to generate calcium cyanogen ammonia.

Application
1. Calcium carbide reacts with water to generate acetylene, which can synthesize many organic compounds, such as synthetic rubber, artificial resin, acetone, ketene, carbon black, etc.

2. Heating powdered calcium carbide and nitrogen to produce calcium cyanamide, i.e. lime nitrogen; Lime nitrogen is an important raw material for the preparation of cyanamide. The melt generated by the reaction of heated lime nitrogen with table salt is used in gold mining and non-ferrous metal industry.

3. Calcium carbide itself can be used as a desulfurizer in the steel industry.

4. Production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC): The calcium carbide method produces PVC by using calcium carbide (CaC2) to generate acetylene (C2H2) in contact with water. Acetylene is synthesized with hydrogen chloride (HCl) to produce vinyl chloride monomer (CH2=CHCl), which is then polymerized to produce polyvinyl chloride - [CH2-CHCI] n - through a chemical reaction method.

5. In the old days, miners went down to the mine and put calcium carbide into iron cans to use the generated acetylene (C2H2) to make a calcium carbide lamp.

Storage
Store in dry, cool, and ventilated places. It must be kept away from fire sources, open fires, and sunlight. Use of specialized calcium carbide containers.
